Guiding Principles

A children's book quote I heard in the third grade resonated so deeply with me that it became my internal fire of inspiration. "Unless someone like you, cares a whole awful lot, nothing's going to get better, it's not." - The Lorax. This quote from a story about protecting our natural ecosystems, especially trees, stuck with me through my youth into adulthood. When I graduated with my Bachelor's of Science in Animal Ecology, instead of my future career aspirations, I asked them to read this Lorax quote. I went on to build a strong career within the non-profit sector, because I genuinely care, and I want to make the world a better place.

Cliche or not, this is the truth. Now growing up being taught empathy for others including animals also helped shaped my outlooks as well. I was the kid standing over rainy day worms to protect them from stomping feet. All the ladybugs possible were rescued from my grandmother's house. Empathy is my superpower; I genuinely care so deeply it hurts. It can be exhausting, but I have acquired an enormous tool kit of self-care skills. Staying active, hydrated, and focusing on nutritious food to fuel my busy life. The most important of those skills is striving to offer myself the same kindness I extend to others. Self-care is essential and, in these times, self-care is rebellion. Let's rest when we need it, find joy everywhere we can, and rise together in empathy to make this world a healthier place for all humans, animals, and the earth.
