Before we dive into the topical focus of tonight's blog, I am excited to give an update on my campaign progress:
Obtained over 20% of the minimum number of petition signatures needed
Currently have 3 coffee meetings scheduled with potential supporters/advisors
Signed up to give 2 short speeches to small interest groups
Intentional and sustainable progress is key. Now, onto a solution-focused topic with a human focus! Did you know that Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is considered a best practice for decreasing homelessness long term? Have you ever heard of PSH? I hadn't either until I spent some time working for an organization providing services for those experiencing homelessness locally. PSH isn't actually permanent, but longer-term supportive housing, providing case-management and other resources like employment resources. The general goal is for residents to stay in a PSH unit for at least 12 months to provide a stable foundation for them to build their future on. The fact is that it is less expensive for our social infrastructure to provide long-term housing to folks who have experienced chronic homelessness than the cost of the frequent emergency room visits and interactions with law enforcement and other social supports. How much less? An estimated $4,754 less per person, per month. Yes, really... that much! (Source: https://www.linncountyiowa.gov/DocumentCenter/View/11509/Six-Page-Summary-Final?bidId=)
Additionally, 23.8% of Linn County residents are housing cost burdened, which means they spend 30% or more of their total income to maintain their housing (Housing | Housing State Report). Housing is the answer to homelessness and affordable housing is a key factor in preventing folks from entering the cycle of homelessness. If elected, part of my service as the district 1 representative for Cedar Rapids City Council would be to advocate for policies, projects, and programs which encourage affordable housing. Housing is a critical piece needed to build a healthier community for all! Food security, health care access, and community connections are factors as well. As an authentic, driven, empathetic, passionate, and persistent woman, I will champion all initiatives which improve the health and wellbeing of our neighbors and residents.
